Education credits. If you are a nonresident alien for any part of
the year, you generally cannot claim the education credits. However, if
you are married and choose to file a joint return with a U.S. citizen
or resident spouse as discussed in Chapter 1, you may be eligible for

qualifying child. For this credit a qualifying child:
Is a U.S. citizen, national, or resident alien,
Is claimed as a dependent on your tax return,

foster child, and
Was under age 17 at the end of the year.
