Here is Dan Box's definetion:
the term Web Service will mean the following:
software that is exposed to other software over Internet-friendly protocols.

Web Services typically use HTTP as their transport, although other
Internet-friendly protocols (such as SMTP) can be used. Web Services typically
use XML as their data format, although other MIME-friendly formats are
possible. Web Services differ from traditional Web pages or applications
primarily based on the target audience. Traditional Web pages and applications
target carbon-based life forms (humans). Web Services target silicon-based
life forms (software agents).

【 在 Edelweiss (雪绒花) 的大作中提到: 】
: What is .NET
:
: 1. It is about services.

:
:    软件不再是分离的, 而是相互通过internet,相互支持, applications talk to
: applications, software talks to software.
:
: 那么什么是services呢?
:
: 2. What is Web Services.
:
:   deliver software as a service.
:
:   以前传统的软件开发是:you use a component in your project, you go into your
: project, you import a component, and it is just like that resource is part
of
: your application.
: Web services: you do it in a services perspective, you not only build
: yourself, you can stitch other things together--aggrage and integrate
: different services.
:
: 3. .NET platform gives
:    a real solid programmatic infrastructure to build the services

more about it.
Notice the firewall issue.

The Web services technology enables cross-platform integration by using HTTP,
XML and SOAP for communication thereby enabling true business-to-business
application integrations across firewalls. Because Web services rely on
industry standards to expose application functionality on the Internet, they
are independent of programming language, platform and device.
