The "G" in 5G doesn't stand for gigahertz or gigabit. It stands for "
generation". It's a global standard developed mostly in Europe. Here is a
brief timeline of standards:
Pre-1G: the MTS, or Mobile Telephone System. Built in the late 1940's. It
sucked, and you can ask me why.
1G: the analog AMPs system, the first true cellular system, developed in the
late 70's, first deployed in Chicago in 1984.
4G: LTE/WiMAX (WiMAX mostly defunct)
As for health effects, no health testing has been done, at least that I have
heard/seen. Regulation of the radio deployments is forbidden at the state/
local level under the 1996 Telecom Act.
