2012 is a race of:
Can Apple add a big screen / LTE option to iPhone 5 while keeping
battery usage under control. Right now the #1 reason for mainstream
users to go Android is for the bigger screen and Apple really need to
offer two screen size choices like its Macbook/iMac products.
Apple also needs to put iPhones on more carriers, as iPhone pretty much
outsells Android on every carrier that has both, but they are behind on
market share because it is still not available on so many carriers like
Can Google clean up the market to attract better apps and especially
games. Android装"免费"软件比较方便 is exactly why iOS makes 90% of the apps
revenue and gets better quality apps first. Google must do something
about piracy to be competitive. In the past platform wars, the platform
that had better third party developer support always won. Google is
winning market shares but getting very little real profit for it. iPhone
alone makes more money than Google's entire business.
Google also needs to make it easier for app developers to support
multiple device types and especially graphic chips. A DirectX type of
API is very badly needed to compete with iOS. Smartphone will eat much
of handheld gaming device's market (see poor sales for Sony PS Vitas) in
the next a few years and Android must do a better job with gaming. It
is the #1 apps category for both platforms today.
Microsoft has a chance IF they aggressive pay money to apps developers
to put their best apps on Windows Phone first. Basically if EA or
Gameloft is willing to publish their titles there, Microsoft will
guarantee certain revenue numbers and pay out of their own pockets to
make sure developers get paid.
Paying for exclusive apps/games/contents (say mobile versions of Xbox
360 games on Windows Phone) will also help. Yes this means taking huge
hits early but it is the only way they can make themselves legit. MS
made Xbox legit against Sony after all, they have experience playing
catch up but they must be willing to pay for contents. Amazon is taking
huge losses to get market share in tablet space. It is the only way to
compete against Apple.
Cross marketing on their existing Xbox users will help a lot. I also
think it is a big mistake for them to release Microsoft Office for other
mobile platforms. They need to make it exclusive for Windows
phones/tablets, maybe even throw in a limited version as built-in.
They do have a chance because Google is not doing anything about their
fragmented ecosystem and rampant (out-of-box) piracy. Microsoft gets
paid on every Android handset sale, they can use this money to fuel
Windows Phone contents.
It is not a battle of hardware or even software, it is a battle of
