Just come back from TJ, Mexico.
This is a totally different experience than what people here been had in TJ.
Date: 4/1/08
7:00am: I crossed the border, took the cab, paid at the bank
9:30am Line up in front of US Ambassy. Took 20 minutes to get to the infor
window.
10:00am Took picture, fingerprints.
10:15am Waiting for interview. I check the line and I am the 7th person. Seem good but here the nightmare started.
First I noticed that the "Mexican mama" is NOT there. A middle age blonde
white women instead. She called the first indian guy and interview him for more
than half hr. Finally she asked the guy come back again at 1:00am for another
interview. Then, she disappeared along with other VOs for more than an hour and
half. After she come back she interviewed a couple and two indian ladies. Each one of
them been questioning for 30mins long. The place was filling up quickily at that. There are more than 25+ person waiting. Then the miracle happened, the mexican mama openned up another window. The indian girl in front of me got her and I stuck with the white women. She interviewed me for 20mins and it was almost 2:00pm. Actually I got
my degree in Buffalo, NY and she is from Buffalo too. We have a very nice
chat and everything seen fine to me. However, at last she said, "good news and bad
news". Bad news is I can't grant your visa today, and good news is I will
give you some paper and you can go back and wait three weeks in US while
background check is perform in Washinton DC." When I got out of there, it is
almost 2:30pm and there are at least 10 people waiting. I took a cab to US border. The VO in the "little white house" only took 2 minutes to decide let me go. No delay there.
My experience was totally difference than what I had read here. Just want to
share my experience. Becareful with the white lady. She is slow and she ask
a lots of questions. Eventhough we have a very nice and friendly
conversation, she still not grant my visa. However, she did said she wish it
was difference, she is sorry for that and blah blah blah to make me feel
better. Really strange. The reoson I got background check can be anything
but here is my background:
1. 30 yrs old Malaysia born chinese (Malaysia is a islamic country)
2. 11 yrs in US. Bachelor in physics, MS in EE and PhD in EE
3. Working as a Postdoc. Research in Solar cell fabrication and
semiconductor processing. (She ask a lot of question about my research area.
even she don't understand but she keep on asking.)
She gave me a trick questions. "What kind of working environment? In
laboratory or...." I mention several thing but when I said "cleanroom" and
she said "ah!" then stop. I guess she got the key word.
Here is my thinking. "male, 21-45, islamic country origin, highly educated,
access with high tech material" do sound like a potential terrorist.
I going to wait three weeks till they call me. Pray FBI won't show up on my
door step. Good luck to those of you decide to get visa renew in TJ, mexico.
No more advance as I know.
