computer science, civil engineering, architecture, or what???
some observations:
1. GIS is not hot in CS, only people doing spatial database claim GIS as
interests
2. GIS is hot topic for those who claim "IT in civil engineering" as interest
3. GIS is also hot for architecture people
4. some interdisciplinary people such as information systems may also
study GIS
5. For academic jobs, only IT branch in civil-related majors are hiring GIS ppl
6. For industry jobs,  it depends, but still most jobs are in civil or environmental
sector
7. So, CS or IS ppl are not encouraged to study GIS
8. Civil-related majors are highly encouraged to study GIS, heh

just personal opinions

Don't forget people from Geography, it is "G"IS

I believe GIS programmer's salary is lower (if not much lower) than other
software programer. So, if not really interested in GIS, I don't think a
computer science/engineering guy will work on this.

Actually, pure GIS work won't offer high salary either. You don't want to be
someone ONLY knows how to use GIS software.

I remembered some article mentioned, in 1999(or early), ESRI is the 34th
software company (in US?), in 2000, it is 89. (Sorry for the inaccuracy)

A civil engineer can earn more than being a GIS guy -- I guess.

Anyway, GIS is a small part of IT.

yeah, counties in the US are always hiring GIS specialists, but the salary is
not that good. But I still cannot get one!!

some environmental agencies like to hire such person to do some spatial
analysis, but this person should have some backgroud in environment

IT is a broad name, mine is IS + AI, AI can be a science
Tools also differ, some tools are sophisticated such as math, other
tools are simpler or less important such as GIS mapping

AI is an important building block of the emerging "Neoro-Science": Fully
automated Observation-Cognition-Learning from vast amount of data. And
Geo-data is the best test field.
Because in the automation process of Geospatial science fields, one essential
question is: Suppose we can have automatic scientific observation with >70%
correct/desirable samples, how can we refine that correct rate to >90%
automatically.
