You should receive another form (sorry, I forgot the name of
this form) from your school along with your W-2. That
means this $5000 had been deducted from your taxable income
before you started to caculate your other deductions and
expemption. For example, if your made $10,000 in 1999,
first you need to subtract $5000 from your salary. In your
case, you did not have other itemized deduction such as
charity contribution, medical expense...except your state
tax. State tax should be included as an itemized deduction
for your federal tax. You should deduct what you have paid
for state tax in 1999 as your intemized deduction. (The
easiest way is write down the total state tax showed on your
last paycheck in 1999. The difference between the actaul
state tax and the amount have been deducted from your
paycheck is the adjustment of year 2000.) Then you need to
subtract another $2750(personal exemption). Suppose you did
not have any other income such as interest income... At
last, your total taxable income should be
$10,000-$5,000-$2,750-state tax=? :-) for the federal tax
purpose. This $2,750 was federal personal exemption in 1999.
You should have a state personal exemption for the state
Talk to the cashier office staff in your school about your
tax treaty exemption. Good luck.

: 0 还是$5000? According to the representative (tax office), I can
